MESSAGE FROM YOUR TYRANT:
Gentlemen:
There
is so much to say that I don't know where to begin, but I'm also pretty sure
you won't read anything that goes over half a page so I am going to keep it
short. The 2008 Worlds are over, and it seems like everyone had an incredible
time (even though the wind didn't fully cooperate). Personally, I had a lot of
firsts - the first time I've hit a concrete wall head on, the first time I've
given myself a black eye, the first time I realised there are scarier things on
the water than big wind (see: Joel Magnan), and the first time I've seen a
group of people pull together to do a lot of amazing things for no other reason
than the love of the sport. I can't thank CORK enough for the fantastic job
they did with the racing logistics (I didn't hear a single complaint about the
courses that were set, and the volunteers were amazing), and we had many
generous sponsors (including Velocitek, Harken, Mount Gay, Ecover, and, of
course, the Outer Harbour Centreboard Club), but whether it was billeting,
towing boats back and forth, towing competitors back and forth, lending parts,
or giving advice - everyone in the North American fleet (and their partners)
pitched in to make this a great regatta. Links to the photos were posted on the
blog so you can reminisce about this great summer (http://contenderworlds2008.blogspot.com)
and look forward to the next time the Worlds are held in North America (we're
thinking of Florida).
We
will continue to have great events for 2009, and hopefully we'll have some new
members in our fleet.
Stephanie
MESSAGE FROM YOUR SECRETARY / TREASURER:
Thanks
to the high level of volunteerism by members and their spouses, a lot was
achieved this past season with a minimum of financial resources. Many thanks to
the OHCC for their support of the Contender class, their generosity is greatly
appreciated. Fiscally we are solvent and
in a position to help in a modest way to offset some of the Worlds deficit,
details to come. Early payment of 2009 class dues would help breathe a little
more life into the account.
Rick
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON
Team Sunday
You wouldn't
know it from the CCA website, but some of us did get up at some ungodly hour to
do some sailing on Saturday or Sunday mornings, when the only other things up
were birds and rowers. Unfortunately, more weekends than not, the wind didn't
make it worth getting out of bed, so there wasn't much to write home about.
Ottawa Skiff Grand Prix (June 7 - 8, 2008)
Unlike the 2007
edition of the OSGP, 2008 was honking. Every other fleet that showed up for
this event on the clear brown waters of Lac Duchenes suffered some kind of
mishap (including one Vector going down the rapids), but none of our sturdy
little bateaus had any incidents to report. Once again, Roger didn't fail to
disappoint, winning the single-handed division, and doing what Roger does when
he sails - cheating death in a spectacular fashion. See the full story (and
awesome shot) on the CCA or Ottawa Skiff website
(http://www.osrf.ca/basepage.php).
Heineken High Performance Dinghy Regatta
(October 11 - 12, 2008)
The
Worlds didn't manage to exhaust Neil , Frank, and Jo Roesler (who relocated to
Connecticut), and they made the trip to Rye, NY, for the HPDO. Unfortunately,
there wasn't much. Even more tragic - you needed a shirt and tie to get into
the American Yacht Club. Awful.
